As temperatures climb, our pets face specific seasonal risks. By being informed and prepared, you can ensure a safe and joyful summer for your furry companions.

1. Stay Cool & Hydrated

  • Always have fresh, cool water available—indoors, in the yard, and on the go. Animals dehydrate quickly in the heat.

  • Watch for heatstroke signs: excessive panting, drooling, rapid heart rate, vomiting, weakness, glazed eyes.

2. Avoid Hot Surfaces

  • Pavement and asphalt can burn paws. Use the hand test: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws—opt for grass instead.

3. Time Outdoor Activities Wisely

  • Walk and play early morning or late evening, avoiding midday heat and excessive exertion.

  • Limit exercise during heat alerts and prioritize shade and water breaks.

4. Never Leave Pets in Cars

  • A parked car can hit dangerous temperatures fast—70°F outside becomes 89°F inside in 10 minutes, 104°F in 30 minutes.

  • Heatstroke from cars kills in minutes—always leave pets at home on hot days.

5. Protect Outdoor & Farm Animals

  • Outdoor pets and livestock need constant shade, fresh water, and adequate food—grass may die and heavy food spoils faster in heat.

6. Seasonal Stressors: Fireworks & Travel

  • Summer celebrations often bring fireworks and loud noises—keep pets indoors in a calm, secure space during events .

  • Long car travels? Air-condition the vehicle first, use water breaks, cooling treats, and secure crates—never leave them unattended when the car is off.

With a little extra care and attention, summer can be a fun and safe season for everyone—paws included! Whether you’re hitting the trails, relaxing in the backyard, or planning a weekend getaway, don’t forget to look out for your four-legged companions. They count on you to keep them cool, comfortable, and safe.
